This article demonstrates an easy way to create dynamic CSS-based navigation menus that let you change the navigation of your website throughout the site with a simple upgrade of the MySQL database. For this example, you will be using the Chrome CSS Drop Down Menu available from Dynamic Drive. It is a free, lightweight CSS menu that is easily customizable and uses only a small amount of JavaScript code. There are other free CSS menus available, such as the Suckerfish menu and other options commercial menu available.
This article assumes the reader is unfamiliar with Dreamweaver, PHP and MySQL. Turning on your navigation menu of a database lets you easily change the navigation of your site, simply by updating the fields in the database comprising all Dreamweaver records. Construction of the navigation of your site using CSS also allows for rapid changes around the site through the style sheet format.
The first step is to apply the CSS menu of your choice. It is useful to include several mock menu items like the style of your menu for you to see how the navigation menu will appear with multiple options. Once the menu is in place, go back and delete all but the first menu element in the HTML unordered list.
The second step is to create the table of MySQL database that provides energy to your menu. Using MySQL Administrator of his choice, create a table that includes three fields: a single car ID number field, a field containing the text displayed by each menu option, and a hyperlink field, including a link for each menu item by clicking next. Depending on the structure of the site, you can use relative or absolute URLs in this field. At this point, insert data into the database table to populate the site when loaded. For example, in the first row of the table, you could read the menu "HOME" and "index.php URL.
Then go back to Dreamweaver to set the dynamic menu. With the page open, establish a connection to the MySQL database and create the recordset from the menu. Include all fields from the database and not use filters on the data. Of Back in the code, find the first menu item you leave in the previous location. Highlight the text in quotes after the href part of the code. Sign in panel connections and open the recordset you created for the menu. Click and drag the field that represents the link URL field in your code where you highlighted the link href. This will create the PHP code to dynamically assign the link for each menu item. Then highlight the code in the menu item to display the browser's text for each menu item. Grab all the records for binding and drag in the code. This will create the PHP code necessary to dynamically display each menu item.
The last step in the process is the creation of the repeat region that is repeated for each row of database table. Just select all the code for opening closing tags surrounding li menu item. Go to the server behaviors panel in Dreamweaver and select the "Repeated Region" option. Select correctrecordset for the menu and click on the button to select all records. That completes the dynamic menu creation.
After loading the page to your test server, you can view each menu item that has been introduced in its database to display on your menu. The links are generated dynamically all point to the relevant pages. If you see the page code, you can see that makes a clean list for menu items. The code is short and simple and easy to search engines. For added functionality and creating menus down, simply create a database table that includes Sublinks and include a table field containing the master table ID value. Simply identify the filter for each main menu option, and dynamically generate the submenu the same way as did the main menu. The menu can be included in a Dreamweaver template for inclusion on every page of your website. When a page is added to the site, simply add the menu items and links in the database and displayed on each page that includes the navigation. Doesn'tget is much easier than to create dynamic database-driven CSS menus.
